PARI Pharma and Kamada to develop Inhaled Emphysema Therapy

MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA, January 24, 2006 – PARI Aerosol Research Institute and Kamada Ltd. (TASE:KMDA) have signed an agreement to develop an inhaled treatment for pulmonary emphysema, a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Currently, the treatments for pulmonary emphysema are injection therapies that distribute medication throughout the bloodstream in order to reach the lungs. An inhaled treatment would offer a targeted therapy by delivering medication to the lungs via aerosol inhalation.

Kamada, a maker of generic human plasma therapeutics, will develop and conduct clinical trials of its API drug for the treatment of pulmonary emphysema using PARI Aerosol Research Institute’s eFlow, an electronic nebulizer.

API is an alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor for chronic replacement therapy in individuals who lack alpha-1 antitrypsin and have panacinar emphysema. This type of emphysema is an inherited form.

A lack of alpha-1 antitrypsin leads to a reduction in lung function from a reduced elasticity in the lungs. This leads to emphysema, which is marked by inefficient breathing, shortness of breath, and damage to the walls of the air sacs in the lungs.

Kamada is a leading producer of injection medications for the treatment of this disease. The company is looking to enhance therapies for patients by developing an inhaled and less invasive treatment with PARI’s eFlow.

About eFlow

eFlow, an electronic, portable nebulizer, enables extremely efficient aerosolization of liquid medications via a vibrating, perforated membrane. Compared to other nebulizer systems, eFlow can produce aerosols with a very high density of active drug, a precisely defined droplet size, and a high proportion of respirable droplets delivered in the shortest possible amount of time. Combined with its silent mode of operation, small size (it fits in the palm of your hand), light weight, and battery use, eFlow helps reduce the burden of taking daily inhaled treatments.

About Kamada

Kamada is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in development, production, and marketing of specialty plasma therapeutics, specific and general immune globulins, and other prescribed medicines using sophisticated chromatographic purification technology. Kamada, Ltd. is based in Rehovot, Israel.
